The 7th International North Cyprus Theatre Festival runs from the 1st to the 26th September, 2009. Performances are as follows.
1st September.
Images of Ottoman History by the Konya
State Theatre. Satirical images to show how uprisings only bring
unhappiness to people and how we should learn from history.
5th September.
The Return of Marx by the Dostlar
Theatre. The play portrays the return of Karl Marx. Marx is given
permission to return from some secular afterlife to give his opinion
on today’s circumstances.
8th September.
Cabaret by Istanbul City Theatre. The
musical portrays Berlin in 1931 and tells the love story of a
cabaret star and an American writer. The play became famous through
the film which starred Liza Minelli.
11th September.
Those with Masks by the Istanbul City
Theatre. The dramatic relationship between three brothers in wartorn
Palestine.
16th September.
Educating Rita by the Adana State
Theatre. In this dramatic comedy a literature professor meets a
hairdresser who prefers to read trite romances. With the help of the
professor, she learns to broaden her literary taste through learning
to discriminate, thus gaining self-confidence.
21st September.
Animal Farm by the Sivas State Theatre.
Animal Farm is a dystopian novel published in England in 1945. The
book reflects events leading up to and during the era of Stalin
before World War II. Orwell was a critic of Stalin. In Animal
Farm, the animals revolt openly against the unfairness of human
beings.
22nd September.
Who has a Donkey Ear? by the Satirigo
Theatre. A puppet show discussing human characteristics as they
should be in an ideal world, with respect to nature, environment,
and honesty
24th September.
Praised for a comfortable living by the
Pera Theatre. A musical cabaret uncovering the currents under the
surface of bourgeois life: poverty, corruption.
26th September.
The Merchant of Venice. Shakespeare’s
text is adapted to today’s circumstances and reveals the position
and relationship of Christians and Jews.
Tickets cost 15Tl, or 100TL for the series. All performances are in Turkish at the Ataturk Cultural Centre at the NEU, Nicosia, and start at 9pm, with the exception of the 22nd September, which starts at 7pm.
