Sidestreets
third Art Film Series, 20 November - 18 December.
Today in Cyprus, film is typically seen by the general public simply
as a medium of entertainment (the popular film or blockbuster) or
communication (the documentary or political statement). Yet in
the early 20th century, film was both an exciting new technology and
a new creative opportunity. Artists and writers changed the
perception of both art and the world by exploring the limits
of their media and creating the explosive new forms of expression
that became known as Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, Expressionism, and
Lettrism.
Sidestreets’ Third Art Film Series continues its tradition,
foregrounding film as a medium of creative experimentation and
artistic expression, and creating a forum for discussing a wide
range of works of avant-garde and experimental cinema. These works
are outside the mainstream and rarely screened in cinemas, but were
the foundation for all that has followed since then, from
underground film to contemporary music videos and YouTube. Each
evening will include an introduction to the films and discussion of
the dynamic, modern artistic movements that emerged in the early
twentieth century. (All films are silent or in the original language
with English subtitles.)
Friday 20th November, 7:00 p.m.
Luis Buñuel & Salvadore Dali, “An Andalusian Dog”; Joris Ivens &
Mannus Franken, “Rain”; Erno Marzner, “Chance”; Orson Welles &
William Vance, “Hearts of Age”; Fernand Léger, “Mechanical Ballet.”
